| Compared to common
transrectal systems, the used transperineal technique
gives more accuracy and better access to all prostate
regions. The standardized workflow with reporting capabilities
enables state of the art quality assurance. The stored
data can be used for further review and in case of positive
specimens it can be directly imported into treatment systems.
The procedure is split into: 3D image acquisition,
planning and finally US guided needle insertion. For
the acquisition part, an integrated US scanner with
custom transrectal probe is used. The probe itself is
mounted on a stepper device that ensures stability during
recording of 3D data.
The planning process includes delineating target and
risk regions. One can use a systematic protocol as well.
Thanks to the Fusion Imaging contours and other information
can be transferred between different modalities (CT,
MR, US, PET etc.). The needle insertion procedure is
supported by live US imaging with planning information
overlaid on the screen. One can of course switch freely
between the transversal and longitudinal view. Each
step of the process can be documented and the whole
report is saved in the database.
DICOM functionality is a standard custom hardware design
which includes embedded ultrasound scanner.
